One of the reasons I decided to Stay Army Reserve is because of SGT Chung Ng, a military buddy, who saved my life in Iraq. While guarding prisoners at the EPW camp in Camp Bucca, SGT Fernando Franco was caught in a riot during a prisoner extraction.
The 12-person MP team faced 500 angry prisoners in that pen alone. One of the prisoners attacked and SGT Chung Ng shot, saving Franco’s life. The bullet passed inches from his shoulder, catching and killing the prisoner who was in mid-swing with a heavy tent stake and nearly on top of Franco.
When the unit returned, SGT Ng collapsed from an undiagnosed brain aneurysm. Despite spending three years in a brain trauma unit, SGT Ng eventually succumbed to his condition. He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions during the EPW riot.
