SSG Melissa Buchholz is a 12N (Heavy Equipment Operator) with the 996th Engineer company. Following enlistment in 2003, she joined the 961st Engineer Company and deployed to Afghanistan with a unit detachment in 2006-2007.
“I like MOS. It’s fun to operate big equipment, especially to see people’s reaction when I step out after completing a big job.”
SSG Buchholz Wanted to go active duty when she first enlisted but didn’t want to be far from her family. The Army Reserve allows her to enjoy a military career while stay close to her family in Milwaukee. In 2010 she earned a MILTECH position with the 996th allowing her to work for the military for her full-time job as well.
Previous to that, Buchholz was an occupational nurse and worked at her father’s business landscaping (“I guess I’ve always liked playing in the dirt!”) She likes her unit because they are a good location from home and have plenty of room for promotion. In the future, SSG Buchholz plans to make SFC and become a Drill Sergeant in a reserve capacity
She is joined at NCRC by Tom, her significant other, and Desiree Snyder, her niece.
